Flannel Friday: You Are My Flower

My Flannel Friday contribution for this week is a flower-themed flannel board inspired by Elizabeth Mitchell's rendition of You Are My Flower. This folk song has been recorded by lots of singers, including the Carter Family, so it's not original to Elizabeth Mitchell, but her version is the one I knew first, and I think it has the most singable tune.

So I borrowed her tune, changed the words slightly, and came up with the following verses. The clipart I used is the same as what is pictured below, and it came from clker.com.

Oh, yellow flower.
You're blooming in the mountain for me.
Oh, yellow flower.
You're blooming there for me.

Oh, blue flower.
You're blooming in the mountain for me.
Oh, blue flower.
You're blooming there for me.

Oh, pink flower.
You're blooming in the mountain for me.
Oh, pink flower.
You're blooming there for me.

Oh, green flower.
You're blooming in the mountain for me.
Oh, green flower.
You're blooming there for me.

Oh, purple flower.
You're blooming in the mountain for me.
Oh, purple flower.
You're blooming there for me.

Once all the flowers are up on the flannel board, then sing one final verse about all of them together:

Oh, pretty flowers.
You're blooming in the mountain for me.
Oh, pretty flowers.
You're blooming there for me.

Another possible variation, which I have not tried, would be to keep the original first line of "You are my flower" and instead replace "mountain" with other possible places that a flower might grow. These might include a meadow, garden, flower pot, park, or backyard. I think for kids in my community it might be especially useful to think of all the places we see flowers, since mountains might seem a little removed from us, but parks and gardens and backyards are part of our daily lives.

Erin of Falling Flannelboards is hosting this week. As always, the complete archive and hosting schedule is kept by Anne. Also, to those celebrating this weekend, Happy Easter!
