Hello and Goodbye Songs

Hello Songs

Hello, How Are You?

This is my hello song for my drop-in story times, preschool story times, pajama story times, and class visits. At preschool story time, it is often followed by If You'd Like to Read a Book.

Tune: Skip To My Lou

(Waving)
Hello, how are you?
Hello, how are you?
Hello, how are you?
How are you today?

(Point to self, then point to your neighbor)
I'm fine; I hope you are, too.
I'm fine; I hope you are, too.
I'm fine; I hope you are, too.
I hope you're fine today.

(Clapping)
I'm clapping my hands; you do it, too.
I'm clapping my hands; you do it, too.
I'm clapping my hands; you do it, too.
Clap your hands with me.

Please Tell Us Your Name

This is one hello song that I have used in small-group registration-only story times.

I'm happy that you came!
Who is sitting next to you?
Please tell us your name.

Say Hello To Your Toes
Tune: London Bridge

This is the hello song for Fall 2012's Baby Lap Time.

Say hello to your toes.
Hello, toes. Hello, toes.
Say hello to  your toes.
Hello, toes!

Say hello to your knees...
Say hello to your tummy...
Say hello to your hands...
Say hello to your head...
Say hello to your friends...

Goodbye Songs

Open, Shut Them Goodbye Song

This is my goodbye song for baby story time and toddler story time. Most of the time, this goodbye song is preceded by If You're Happy and You Know It.

Open, shut them.
Open, shut them.
Raise your hands up high.
Open, shut them.
Open, shut them.
Wave and say goodbye.

We Wave Goodbye Like This

This is my goodbye song for my drop-in story times, pajama story times, and class visits. Most of the time, this goodbye song is preceded by If You're Happy and You Know It. In Summer 2013, it is preceded by If You're Happy and You Know It and The More We Read Together. At Pajama Story Time, the goodbye song is preceded by Goodnight and If You're Happy and You Know It.

Tune: The Farmer in the Dell

We wave goodbye like this.
We wave goodbye like this.
We clap our hands for all our friends.
We wave goodbye like this.

  1. Thanks for sharing these songs. I'm going to be using a few of them soon. I like to end my Story Times with "The More We are Together" with the children in a circle (almost) swinging arms. We've also been learning a few basic sign language signs like my, your, and friend so we sign those at the appropriate times.
