This week, my Flannel Friday contribution is an original story I wrote. I've been presenting a letter of the day at each drop-in story time since the start of the school year, and on Tuesday, it was time for the letter X. I wasn't crazy about most of the X-related activities I found online, so I decided to write my own, using the concept of a pirate's treasure map where "X marks the spot." Here is the final product, entitled Pirate Rex's Xs. (Feel free to use this story, but if you repost it on your blog, please use it in its original form and link back to this post. Thanks!)
“X marks the spot to find the treasure!” said Rex.
Under the first X, he found...
A red feather!
“On to the next X!” said Rex.
Pirate Rex went to the second X.
Under the second X, he found...
a blue feather!
“On to the next X!” said Rex.
Pirate Rex went to the third X.
Under the third X, he found...
a yellow feather!“On to the next X!” said Rex.
Pirate Rex went to the fourth X.
Under the fourth X, he found...
A parrot!
“I will name you Treasure,” said Rex.
The end.
The pirate image I used comes from MyCuteGraphics.com. The feathers and Xes come from Clker.com. Since I am free to distribute images from those sites, I have put them into a .pdf file, which you can download here. The parrot came from a Google images search, and I don't believe it is free to share online, so you'll have to search for your own parrot if you want one!

Cute story. The kids always love surprises on the flannelboards!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Lisa! The surprise ending was a big with the kids and the grown-ups!
DeleteVery cute - and I agree with Lisa, the kids love a surprise on those flannel boards.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jane! Lisa is so right - the element of surprise is great every time.
DeleteCute! I love how the feathers lead you to the bird. And his name! Adorable.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I was going for kind of a "Blues Clues" approach. I think it worked.
DeleteThis is so fun for the letter X! I can't wait to do it with my preschoolers next month. Thanks for sharing!
