This preschool program finishes at the end of May, so today was my last visit. I was presented with a card with all the kids' handprints on it, and an inside message saying they will miss me saying to "beep your nose!" Adorable. I told the teacher to please get in touch in the Fall - I definitely want to keep this relationship going!
Opening Song: Hello, how are you?
Song: If You'd Like To Read a Book
Book: I Ain't Gonna Paint No More by Karen Beaumont, illustrated by David Catrow (2005)
As I read this one, I pointed to the parts of my body that rhymed with each color. I thought this would be enough of a hint for the kids to identify the parts themselves, but they weren't quite with me. I think the approach was a good one, though, and I'll use it next time - especially if my audience isn't yet able to understand rhyme.
Rhyme: Blue is the Lake
Book: Farmyard Beat by Lindsay Craig, illustrated by Marc Brown (2011)
This is such a fun read-aloud. I got really into the various "beats" that the animals say, and the kids thought that was pretty funny. They also thought Farmer Sue was a little boy, but I guess that was understandable since I think most of the time the farmer is a man. (But kudos to Lindsey Craig for the female farmer character!)
Song: Clap, Clap, Clap Your Hands
Book: Home for a Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown (1956)
I loved this book when I was little, and got really into reading it. I love the rhythm of these lines: "A home for a bunny, / A home of his own, / Under a rock, / Under a stone, / Under a log, / Or under the ground. /
Where would a bunny find a home?" It's so simple and yet so well-crafted. At the end of the story, the little girl closest to me said, "Oh, I like that story!"
Song: Rum Sum Sum
Song: Tommy Thumb
Book: Ask Mr. Bear by Marjorie Flack (1968)
I found this book totally by accident and fell instantly in love. Then I realized some other bloggers have made the story into flannel boards and discovered that I have been missing out! It's a sweet story with nice repetition and a cute twist at the end. And though I didn't plan it this way, it is pretty much perfect for Mother's Day!
Song: These Are My Glasses by the Laurie Berkner Band
