All New Top 100 Picture Book and Chapter Book Polls: My Top 10 Chapter Books

Betsy Bird, the New York Public Library's Youth Materials Collections Specialist, and the writer of School Library Journal's Fuse #8 blog, is hosting The All New Top 100 Picture Book and Chapter Book Polls. Like her 2009 Picture Book Poll and 2010 Chapter Book Poll, this new one will compile responses from bloggers, librarians, teachers, and other bookish folks, to highlight the top 100 books in both categories. I am really excited that she has taken on this project again, because I missed the picture book poll the first time around, and I have never really been satisfied with the list I submitted for chapter books last time, either.

Lists are being accepted until 11:59pm on Sunday night (April 15), so there's still time to get your votes in. In the meantime, here is my chapter book list. I will share my picture book list here on the blog next Friday.

  1. I cannot believe that I am only familiar with A Wrinkle in Time, Because of Winn Dixie and Blubber.

Are these books suitable for a 5th grader, or would they be lower level reads?

    1. Swallows and Amazons and Ballet Shoes are both much older British titles, originally published in 1930 and 1936, so that might be why you haven't heard of them. I only learned of them as an adult, though they are pretty widely available in the US and my library system has them both. They'd both definitely be great for fifth grade, as would Jennifer, Hecate, The Penderwicks, and One Day and One Amazing Morning on Orange Street.

When You Reach Me was the Newbery winner in 2010, and it references A Wrinkle in Time a lot, so I think the experience of reading it is better if you've already read A Wrinkle in Time, but I think a 5th grader would love it.

And The Trouble with Chickens is an early chapter book - that's the only one that might be too basic for a fifth grader. It's more of a second/third grade book.

I'm always glad to spread the good word about books - I hope you read and enjoy some of these!
