ReplyDeleteAre these books suitable for a 5th grader, or would they be lower level reads?
Swallows and Amazons and Ballet Shoes are both much older British titles, originally published in 1930 and 1936, so that might be why you haven't heard of them. I only learned of them as an adult, though they are pretty widely available in the US and my library system has them both. They'd both definitely be great for fifth grade, as would Jennifer, Hecate, The Penderwicks, and One Day and One Amazing Morning on Orange Street.
DeleteWhen You Reach Me was the Newbery winner in 2010, and it references A Wrinkle in Time a lot, so I think the experience of reading it is better if you've already read A Wrinkle in Time, but I think a 5th grader would love it.
And The Trouble with Chickens is an early chapter book - that's the only one that might be too basic for a fifth grader. It's more of a second/third grade book.
I'm always glad to spread the good word about books - I hope you read and enjoy some of these!
