If you delete them and mark them as spam, then it's as though they don't exist. It doesn't matter to me if he's a kid who loves to read or a scammer and a jerk - my approach of responding politely once and ignoring all future correspondence would be the same either way. That is my version of not putting up with it. People who have not dealt with him have an easy time saying "he's a kid who loves to read! Help him out!" We've tried. Trust us, we've tried. His behavior is abusive and inappropriate and I don't want to feel like I'm a Bad Librarian (quoting Jennifer above) for not putting up with it. I have no problem with the people wanting to cooperate and interact with him, but I get annoyed when they make it sound like everyone should do so or you are a Bad Librarian. I think people were mostly joking about him when they didn't realize he was a real teen (something I am frankly still skeptical about) and I wouldn't suggest doing anything nasty - just delete and ignore.Jenniferhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05096787155616041727noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7691585110755964273.post-70429919661292883722016-06-01T10:52:13.560-04:002016-06-01T10:52:13.560-04:00I don't know if this teen is the one being tal...I don't know if this teen is the one being talked about in my Connecticut Children's librarian listserv or not but I've seen many librarians in my community reporting getting multiple e-mails a week from the individual, which must be very frustrating at a very busy time of the year. Some people have been dealing with this person's requests for multiple years. And a contest that has rules that specifically require you cajole librarians doesn't sound like it's about having a great love of libraries. Given those things, I can understand why frustration may have led to some less than civil responses. I agree that we should try to handle this professionally, but we're human and when you annoy us enough, we might not always do our best. There may be a need for libraries to put policy in place, because it is now very easy to register for programs online instead of going to the library. (As I was investigating this at my public library, for example, I think I accidentally registered!) Most of the prizes are from local businesses, so would not be useful to people not in the community. Strange thing to do for a teen; even stranger thing for librarians to get upset about.Ms. Yinglinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17805324364289597178noreply@blogger.com
